The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has announced that Jennifer Mairo, Chief Executive Officer of Joy, Inc., will speak at its Openness Index Capacity Building and Stakeholder Engagement Event scheduled for October 2, 2025, in Abuja. The event will convene CSOs, journalists, and social media influencers to advance press freedom, freedom of expression, and civic openness in Nigeria.
Jennifer will join a panel discussion on “The Role of Public Figures/Social Media Influencers in Advocating for Press Freedom and Promoting Digital Civic Engagement.” Drawing from her experience leading one of Africa’s pioneering storytelling and human-flourishing companies, she will share perspectives on how public figures can drive digital democracy, promote civic participation, and strengthen the fight for an open civic space.
The Openness Index, launched by CJID in July 2025, is the first national framework to track press freedom and civic openness across Nigeria’s 36 states and the FCT. This one-day event will deepen conversations on how evidence-based data can shape reforms, empower advocates, and ensure journalists operate without undue restrictions. With Jennifer’s contribution, the gathering will spotlight the power of influence and advocacy in building a vibrant democratic society.
