The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) recently hosted an engaging forum that explored the evolving role of influencers in shaping media and journalism across Africa. The event convened journalists, creators, and thought leaders to discuss how new voices and platforms can strengthen the spread of credible information and enhance the storytelling process in today’s digital age.
On the panel were Jennifer Mairo, CEO of Joy, Inc., media personality Anto Lecky, and investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo. Together, they unpacked the influence of digital culture and its place in modern journalism. While Anto emphasized the need to make news more lively and engaging, Fisayo highlighted the difference between social media influencers and people of influence with established voices. Jennifer, however, argued that there is no real difference, “as long as you have a platform and people listen to you, you carry influence,” she said.
The panelists encouraged journalists to see influencers as partners who can make journalism more creative, dynamic, and accessible without diminishing the seriousness of issues like democracy and human rights. They stressed the importance of practical tools, such as using captions, positioning as consultants, and leveraging bodies like the NUJ, to protect and elevate the profession. The session not only sparked critical conversations but also offered actionable insights on how journalists can collaborate with influencers to ensure media remains impactful, innovative, and trusted.
