Director of Strategic Partnerships and Capital at Joy, Inc., Dorcas Motunrayo Taiwo, delivered a thought-provoking session at HumAngle’s Advancing Peace and Security Journalism Workshop, where she engaged senior journalists on building sustainable newsroom models in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape.
Speaking on the topic “Financial Sustainability Measures for Newsroom Operations,” Taiwo challenged participants to rethink the core crisis facing journalism, not as a content problem, but as a business model problem. Drawing from industry data and real-world examples, she highlighted the decline of traditional revenue streams across African media and emphasized the urgent need for newsrooms to transition from reactive content production to intentional, product-driven thinking. She urged participants to move beyond measuring output, such as the number of stories published, to focusing on outcomes that create real value for audiences.
Throughout the session, Taiwo introduced practical frameworks for innovation, including asset mapping, revenue diversification, and the “small bets” approach to testing new ideas. She encouraged journalists to see their existing resources, from audience trust to editorial expertise, as valuable assets that can be transformed into sustainable products. Emphasizing that “financial independence is editorial independence,” she called on newsrooms to build systems that ensure longevity, resilience, and integrity. The session left participants with actionable tools to rethink their operations, positioning sustainability not as a distant goal, but as a discipline that must be embedded into everyday newsroom practice.
